fix: prevent nodelink crash when selecting a node

Due to attributes of unknown types, which couldn't be converted to a string by casting. This PR also addresses some related selectionconfig concerns: it not scrolling, keys not being legible. We did decide to have Duncan look at this, but this minimal change already makes it much better.
